Today we celebrated interfaith day. We began our day by joining a zoom call telling us all about the exciting activities that were planned for the day. Our day was based around the story 'little Glow'.

Next, we watched some videos which taught us about different religions and how they celebrate with lights. We coloured our own candles thinking about when we celebrate using light such as Bon Fire Night, Christmas, and birthdays.

After break we made Hanukkah pancakes. We peeled potatoes and grated them. Next, we grated an onion. After this we had to squeeze the water out of the potatoes and onion. We added egg, flour, salt, and baking powder and made a mixture. After lunch Miss Hutchings fried our cakes for us. We all enjoyed eating them once they had cooled down! We finished our day by making paper lanterns which we took home with us.

March 2024

This term we have been looking at the book ‘Jim and the Giant’ by Raymond Briggs’ the children wrote descriptive sentences from the view point of the giant and Jim.  They thought about what the Giant and Jim may say to each other is various parts of the story,  we also described the characters and finally wrote an amazing recount.  The children used all the elements we have learnt and used them to enhance their recount through planning and editing.

In Science we have been learning about plants, we have looked around our school to identify any common garden plants sharing similarities and differences between them including form and colour. We have discussed what different plants require to grow in a variety of environments including desserts and labelled each part of the plant and discussed what it does.  Using all of our knowledge of what a plant needs to grow, the children planted some beans on kitchen paper with water and we attached them to the window, the children also put some in the fridge and some inside the cupboard so we could observe how these variations affect the growth. This is a long term investigation!
In Computing the children have been learning about how to input data and create spreadsheets.  We decided to have an imaginary party and the children created a  list of things that would be needed.  We then competed the spreadsheet by adding data we collected into the cells and used a pre formatted cell to total all the items we needed.
In Maths, we continued to develop our learning and understanding of multiplication and division; the children used their knowledge to solve word problems.  The children have been developing the knowledge of halving and linking it with an equal group and doubling.  We have also learnt about 3D shapes and their properties, lines of symmetry of a shape and we are currently focusing on fractions, ½ , ¼ and a whole.
Throughout the term the children continue to reason and problem solve in a variety of ways to deepen their mathematical knowledge and understanding.

November

In after school club we enjoyed playing games such as dominoes and Ludo/frustration. We also created autumn artwork using paint and cotton buds.

In science we have been focusing on the topic humans.  We began by learning about lifecycles, creating the lifecycle of a butterfly using a variety of pasta shapes.  We then learnt about healthy eating, making our very own monster sandwiches.

We have also focused on healthy hydration linking this to healthy teeth, conducting a ‘think before you drink’ investigation to find out which liquid had the biggest effect on the egg (the shell of an egg is similar to the enamel on our teeth).  We made toothbrush timers to motivate us to brush our teeth for 2 minutes.

In computing we have been learning about programming, applying our learning to Bee-Bots and the app Scratch Jr.

In History we have been learning about Florence Nightingale and really enjoyed our day as Doctors and Nurses.  We made tea stained paper lanterns and learnt how to put someone in the recovery position.

In DT we tasted different pizza before designing our own.

September

We’ve had a great start back to school.  In Math’s we have bee partitioning numbers using Dienes, place and value and tens frames.  We have also started to count in twos. In history we have learnt about the story of Icarus, the history of balloons and the Wright Brothers. We had great fun recreating the plane using marshmallows!  In Science we have been investigating how absorbent and waterproof materials are and in Computing we have been learning how to stay safe online.

We received a visit from the Life Bus and really enjoyed seeing Harold the giraffe again. He helped teach us about our feelings.

Welcome to Yellow Class September 2019 - July 2020

Welcome to Yellow Class news page.  Here you will be able to see what exciting things we've been learning about throughout the school year.

Home Learning in April

We've been keeping ourselves very busy this month. We have been visiting the school and seeing the lovely messages that have been left on the pavement, celebrating the Queens birthday along with making dragons for St Georges Day.  In maths we have been learning to tell the time and to measure using ml and ltrs and learning all about recycling.

To celebrate the April showers we had a week of learning all about water which included Oceans of the world and the water cycle.

Home Learning in March

During week 1 of home schooling, Yellow class have been keeping busy in their homes with all the learning set by Mrs Sherrard.  We have made some lovely sheep, practiced our Maths and English, keeping active and helping around the house.  Keep up the good work everyone.

March 2020

World Book Day

We really enjoyed being taught by Pete the Poet, focusing on rainforests. We used instruments to create a rainforest symphony, recording our music using pictures to represent the sounds. Some of us were making the noise for rainfall whilst others were making loud noises to represent the bulldozers coming in to destroy the rainforest. We then created a poem about how special the rainforest is and why we need to protect it. Finally we role played, acting out scenarios for how to teach others about how to protect the rainforests.

We also focused on the author Nicola Davis, in particular her story Bat Love The Night. We recalled the story using a story map and actions before adopting the opening of the story to write our own version entitled Fox Loves the Night. In art we drew foxes, following step-by-step instructions, colouring them using oil pastels.

Art

We added colour to our Henri Rousseau pictures using a black oil pastel to outline the larger parts of our picture before using oil pastels and / or paints.

Living Eggs - we enjoyed meeting the new additions at Primrose Lane Primary School.

February 2020

In Geography, the children have been learning about the Seven Continents.  They worked in small groups to focus on one continent creating this out of play doagh and finding out facts about it including the oceans that surround it.  They then fed back to the rest of the class.

In Art the children have learnt how to use a pencil to sketch, drawing a background for their rainforest in the style of Henri Rousseau. We also made Valentine’s Day cards by rolling strips of red, purple and pink paper, placing these inside an outline of a heart.

Computing and PSHE - for safer internet day we learnt what being online means and the devices that allow us to access the internet. We created a web to show how the internet links devices. We then played an internet safety game which gave us positive and negative scenarios to discuss with a partner. This game also allowed us to also practice using BeeBots and creating algorithms.

Maths - we made 2D shapes using lolly pop sticks to start our geometry topic. We then named these and described some of their properties.

January 2020

In RE children brought in their favourite books sharing these with others. We then linked this to how Christians feel about the bible.  We enjoyed our school trip to Nine Springs and especially playing in the mud.  We went on a walk during which we made our own journey stick. We then made 2D and 3D shapes using sticks and pipe cleaners.  Finally the children enjoyed time in the playpark.  The school trip was thought of fondly by adults and children alike.

In science the children had been developing their observational skills looking closely at plants drawing what they saw.

The children have also been learning about the plants we eat. They observed closely and drew in detail, labeling the vegetable with the part of the plant it comes from (root, stem, flower, leaf).

December 2019

In History we moved onto learning about the Iron Age creating a model hillfort using play dough.  We learnt why they were built the way they were and the developments from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.  We enjoyed our visit to Trent Woodlands and were lucky to have lovely weather.  Whilst we were there we built our own shelters and foraged for food as Stone Age people would have done.

November 2019

This month Gerry the Giraffe came to visit us taking the place of Barry the Bookworm as he had to visit other schools.  The children learnt about the Gunpowder Plot in preparation for Bonfire night creating their own landscape artwork.   In art the children drew Bell beakers from observation focusing on adding detail and pattern as the Bronze Age people would have done.  In History the children recreated a model of Stonehenge learning about the different stones used and how they were transported there.

October 2019

This month in art we have made Stone Age necklaces using clay and string, following our sketched designs from last week.  In science we have been investigating materials and their properties, creating a carrier, including parachute for an egg.  Miss Newman then dropped our egg parachutes from a height to test their effectiveness. Only a few of them survived but we had fun!

In maths we have been finding number bonds to 10 and 20. We have used tens frames and counters to support us

Maths Day

The school enjoyed the Maths day focusing on developing the children’s level of maths. We had some great costume ideas which included, dice, calculators and dominoes.   The children got to practice using money when they visited Primrose Lane’s very own Tesco’s.

Barry the Bookworm

Yellow class have been working hard to make Barry grow longer and longer each week! Each time a child reads at home a new piece of his body is added. Gold parts are awarded to children when they read over 5 times a week.

This week we had 108 pieces; our best so far!

September 2019

We’ve had a busy month on our return back to school.  In Art we read the story ‘The Dot’ which shared the message that everyone is an artist. We then used a variety of shapes and colours to create our own dots before going around to write encouraging comments about our friends artwork.

In science we have been differentiating between natural and man-made materials. We then used natural materials to create a picture.  We have also been learning about states of matter and used our bodies to behave as the particles do in solids, liquids and gases. We then investigated how states of matter change when they are heated or cooled, identifying whether these changes are reversible or irreversible. We melted chocolate, boiled a kettle, toasted bread and popped popcorn.

In maths we have been finding fact families using objects to support our understanding.

In history we learnt about survival in the Stone Age. We were given a range of activities, including collecting water, making shelter, making fire, and had to organise them according to their priority, explaining their reasoning. One of the things the Stone Age people invented which supported their survival was a bow and arrow, so we had a go at making our own using lowly pop sticks, dental floss and ear buds (what a mixture!).

We had a visit from the life bus. We learnt about caring for our bodies and minds. This included learning about the organs and their jobs, how we can calm ourselves down when we feel angry and how we can be a good friend.

2018-2019

Week Commencing 1st July 2019

We were really lucky to have a visit from Bucklers Mead sports leaders, who led football activities for us! We learnt new skills and even got to play a match!
In science we have begun to learn about light, focusing on the fact that darkness is the absent of light. We tested out this theory by completing a obstacle course blindfolded. Our partners had to give us very specific instructions, applying maths learning to talk about direction.
We enjoyed making our rag rug using the material sent in from home. we were very proud of our ‘Pieces of Primrose’.
In music we have continued to enjoy our learning with Mrs Collins! This week we had all the instruments out and got an opportunity to learn notes.

Week Commencing 24th June 2019

In PSHE we learnt to tell the difference between risk and danger. We then learnt steps to weigh up whether to take a risk or not, applying this to role play situations.
We all really enjoyed our Egyptian day! In the afternoon we became Egyptian explorers, crawling into Turankahum’s tomb! Inside the tomb we saw canopic jars, Egyptian collars and hieroglyphics. As part of our Egyptian day we also became craftsmen, constructing pyramids out of sugar cubes.
In D.T. we continued to make our Egyptian death masks, decorating the different elements! We made the most of the sunshine, painting outside!

Week Commencing 10th June 2019

In Science we investigated the effects of water resistance on objects.  The children looked at how changing the shape of an object slows or speeds the movement up through water.

Week Commencing 3rd June 2019

In Science the children used their knowledge of magnets to create games, these included using magnets to move a paperclip around a maze.  In English as part of our book study on The Twitts, the children created their own tricks for Mr and Mrs Twitt to play on each other and coming up with imaginative and funny ideas.

In ICT the children created animations of their tricks using Purplemash. We finished off the week by celebrating Pyjamarama Day. We all dressed in our Pyjamas and the adults read us a story.

Week Commencing 20th May 2019

The children had SATs party to celebrate their success in their Secret Agent Training. They enjoyed playing party games and a variety of party food.   On the last day of term the children put into practice their PSHE learning, working as a team to play different board games.

Week Commencing 13th May 2019

This week in Science we investigated magnet strength by testing how many paperclips each magnet could hold.  In maths we used the pertunias to make pictograms and in PSHE we have been learning to work cooperatively, practising our skills by completing tangram challenges.  We have continued to further our cricketing skills in PE, by beginning to hit a ball with a bat.

Week Commencing 6th May 2019
