We had an amazing turn out to the book share on Friday 15th November. There were lots of smiles from both children and parents as work was discussed. Lots of parents said what great progress their children had made. Thank you for all the continued support.

On Wednesday 16th October, Year 4 set off on a fun filled day of learning about the Anglo Saxons to Carymoor Environmental Centre. The day consisted of many activities including the grinding of wheat to make flour, creating a human timeline, completing an orienteering quiz, solving a runes problem and weaving beautiful willow plates. Despite the rain, we had a marvellous time and had smiles from ear to ear. The children looked amazing in their Anglo Saxon tunics.

Year 4 have had a very exciting start to the term. Alongside an interesting study into place value in maths and non chronological reports about the Sneaglegator in English, we have been transported back to Roman times to discover what happened as the Romans left and the Anglo Saxons settled. We have learnt lots of interesting facts and can’t wait for our trip to Carymoor.

Welcome to Blue Class September 2023 - July 2024

July 2024

On Thursday 11th July Blue class travelled to the Ancient Technology Centre for our first residential.

It took us about an hour by coach travelling through the beautiful countryside. On arrival we took our bags off the coach and met Andy, one of our guides.

We walked to the camp and laid eyes on the longhouse for the first time. After packing away our things we found our Viking clothing and get dressed. We were ready for our daily chores! We split into 2 groups, group 1 ground the wheat for our bread, made butter for our lunch and washed and chopped vegetables. Group 2 worked outside chopping and sawing wood, mining chalk and making chalk bricks.

Next, we stopped for our Vikings Ploughmans lunch! We had bread, cheese, ham, our own made butter and a range of salad leaves and pickles. We finished with prunes and chopped apples. In the afternoon the groups swapped places and Group 2 made our evening meal.

After a long day we had our dinner, stewed vegetables with barley and stewed chicken. We had stewed apples and cream for our pudding. After that we had the long job of clearing away and washing up! Then we got a chance for a long playtime.

Finally, we made our beds and put on our pajamas. We walked to the round house and Mrs Sherrard read us a bedtime story whilst we drank our hot chocolate.

In the morning we were up nice and early! We had cereal and toast for breakfast and then packed away all of our belongings.

We had a chance to have one last play before we got back onto the coach – tired, smelly but having had a great time!

May 2024

Today Egypt came to Blue Class! We had a visit from South West Heritage who brought lots of interesting artefacts to our classroom.

We learnt some more details about Ancient Egypt and then took part in some fantastic activities!

We made some date bread (but took it home to bake!), we painted lucky scarabs and we became archeologists and dug for artefacts!

Afterwards, we dressed in Egyptian fancy dress.

To end our morning, we were able to watch real footage of Howard Carter and Tutankhamun’s tomb. It was amazing to see and hear the man we have been learning so much about!

As always – what a quick half term!

This half term we have been learning the story of Beowulf. This has helped us to consolidate our previous learning on Anglo Saxons and Vikings. We have put this knowledge to great use writing our own ‘Legends’ story.

In Maths we started the term with measurement and have ended the term with fractions. The children have been busy learning about mixed fractions and improper fractions. As ever we have also had a big push on our times tables and it has been lovely to welcome some children to Early Birds Maths Club.

In Science we have been classifying and grouping living things. We also had a fabulous time doing extra experiments for Science Week and were lucky enough to take part in a live lesson from the farm. This was very informative and we even got to watch a calf being born!

Geography has seen us learning about rivers and mountains. We have examined the water cycle and the different altitude habitats of a mountain. We have finished our learning by studying the floods on the Somerset Levels.

In Art we have been looking at animals in art. We used clay to make Bankura Horses. We then decorated these.

As always thank you for your continued support. The children are all making excellent progress with their learning. I wish you all a happy, peaceful (and chocolate filled!) Easter Holiday and look forward to welcoming everyone back for the Summer Term.

October 2023

On the 11th October Blue class travelled to Carymoor and became Anglo Saxons for the day!
We started by sharing our knowledge with Beth at Carymoor. Next, we had the chance to dress in Anglo Saxon tunics. Some were a little itchy! We then went outside to the round house. It was very smelly as they had recently lit a fire. We took turns in grinding barley to bake bread. We tried 2 different methods, one required a lot more muscle than the other! Next, we went outside and completed an Anglo Saxon orienteering quiz – it took us a long time to find all of the answers.
We all enjoyed eating our lunch together, afterwards we spent time weaving some plates. We found this quite tricky and it required a lot of patience. Next, we went on a rune hunt. We had to find the symbols hidden in the garden and then unscramble the secret message. We were rewarded with chocolate coins! Finally, we ended our day by taking a walk back into the past to discover all of the different creatures that were living in England at that time. Our challenge was to name the creature by identifying their footprints.

September 2023

Wow what a start to the new term! It has been lovely to welcome old faces and some new faces into Blue Class. We have a new classroom assistant Miss Hughes. We have had a busy week getting to know our new classroom and routine.
We have started our learning in English by inventing our own mythical creatures. In Maths we have been revisiting our numbers up to 1000. We have started our History topic by learning what happened to Britannia after the Romans left and we ended our week dancing and singing to ‘Mamma Mia’ – our music topic this term!

January 2023

Blue class are starting to learn about Robert Burns in preparation for Burn’s Night. We made the Scottish dessert of Cranachan using oats, double cream, honey and raspberries. We had a great time making it and really enjoyed eating it too!

Blue class has had a lovely week using the new Trim trail.

The children from Blue class have been listening to a range of songs by ABBA.  We performed the song Mamma Mia with glockenspiel accompaniment.

Blue Class had a fantastic Anglo-Saxon day at Carymoor Environmental Centre on Tuesday 4th October.  After meeting our workshop leader Nat, we shared our knowledge about the Anglo Saxons and made a human timeline.  It was then time for dressing up as Anglo Saxons.  We went outside and ground barley using a saddle quern stone and a rotary quern stone.  The next activity was completing a multiple choice orienteering quiz in groups.  We had a go at weaving plates with strips of willow which was quite tricky.  After lunch, we did a runes treasure hunt and we had to decode the letters.  The letters spelt the words ‘GOLD COINS’ and Nat kindly rewarded the children with chocolate coins for their efforts.  Before playing some Anglo Saxon games, we did an animal footprint trail around the field.  The largest footprints belonged to an animal called the auroch which is now extinct.  We all had a great day.  Thank you to Mr Lancaster and Mrs Baggridge for supporting us on our visit.
