Violet Class have really enjoyed their Frozen Kingdom topic. We have discovered some of the strange animals that call the polar regions their home and found out about they ways in which living things have adapted to live there. We have found out about the golden age of polar exploration, creating a timeline of the race to the South Pole.

We have had a great day today – World Book Day. We really enjoyed visiting other classes and reading to other children and listening to them read. The staff did a story marathon and they visited classrooms reading a story for 5 minutes at a time. We had fun guessing who would visit next.
Our spoons have been on display today and we are really impressed with all of the characters that have been produced.

Violet class have been working hard in PE to master the art of straddle rolls. They started by learning them individually and then had the confidence to do them in groups of 2,3 and 4. Watch out for the photo of the ‘whole class’ attempt!

The Djembe drum is said to have been invented in the 12th Century by the Mandinke tribe in what is now Mali, in West Africa. It has been played by West Africans for generations forming an integral part of ritualistic life in Mali, Guinea, Senegal and other neighbouring West African countries.
Mrs Thompson kindly arranged for us to have weekly lessons, learning how to play the Djembe drums. A very talented Djembe drum teacher comes in once-a-week to show us what to do. Hopefully, if we are good enough, we will be able to play to the whole school in an assembly, just before Easter!

Geography - Frozen Kingdoms
For our Frozen Kingdoms project, we have been looking at Inuit art. Inuit and their ancestors have been expert carvers for thousands of years. As well as tools and weapons, they carved art objects from bone, ivory and wood. Ancestors of today's Inuit carve birds, bears and other land and sea mammals, human figures and masks.
We thought we’d have a go at carving some Inuit animals out of soap. First of all, we drew around our bar of soap. Next, we drew an animal that the Inuit would carve. We then cut our animal out and drew around it with a sharp pencil on the bar of soap. Once our design was outlined, we began to carve!

We have also been looking at the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres.
Today we looked at Polar Day and Night. We paired up and tried to explain that at some times of the year, the poles are in near-constant daylight, known as polar day, or Midnight Sun. At other times of the year, the poles are in near-constant darkness, known as polar night. We looked at the concept of polar days and nights through matching up sorting cards with as to whether they are true or false. We shared our answers and then wrote the true facts down in our Geography books. Here are photos of us sorting the facts out!

Science - Researching Batteries
This week we have been wondering how batteries actually work. We decided to research this on the internet and came up with lots of answers to the following questions:
How do cells work?
Who invented the battery?
How are rechargeable batteries different to normal cells?
What are the different types of cells, and how are they different?
How does wireless battery charging work?
You will be able to find out the answers to all these questions in our science books!

Science - Heart Rate
For our science project we have been looking at the functions of the heart. We decided to carry out an investigation. We measured our heart rate using different points on our body. We made sure it was a resting heart rate. We used our radial pulse, carotid pulse, popliteal pulse and dorsalis pulse to take readings.
We then decided on a chosen exercise in our pairs and agreed how long we would exercise for. We experimented with various exercises and measured our pulse afterwards. We found out that some exercises make your heart beat faster than others!

Science - Electricity
This week for our science project we have been looking at electricity. We can match up electrical components to their symbols, like this:
Mrs Robinson gave us a choice of electrical components to make into real circuits. Once we had made our circuits, we drew then using the correct symbols.

Geography
Violet Class have been looking at atlases for information on the polar regions for our Frozen Kingdoms Geography topic.
We looked at which hemispheres they are in and what the temperatures of the Arctic and Antarctic are. We also looked at the wildlife in both hemispheres and compared plant growth and terrain. We found out that the topography of the Artic is Tundra and the topography of the Antarctic is mountainous. Even though the weather in both regions is the same, the plants that grow there are not, because the temperature varies considerably.
We are going to continue using our atlases because they are really interesting and full of useful information!
