“The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.”

VISION
At Primrose Lane Primary School, our pupils are passionate about History. They are curious about the past and interested to understand how and why events occurred. They go on to question why people interpret the past in different ways and, as a result, think about how the future is shaped. Through an enquiry-based approach, children experience and reflect on what they have learnt in order to answer ‘big questions’. In high-quality History lessons, the children are encouraged to be engaged and proactive in their learning whilst developing the skills of critical thinking, questioning, researching and inspiring developing their own perspectives and judgements. In Key Stage 1, children develop an awareness of the past and the ways in which it is similar to and different from the present. They learn about the passing of time and about some significant individuals and events from historical periods. In Key Stage 2, pupils go on to develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British and World History. They continue to develop the skills learnt at Key Stage 1 and delve deeper into noting trends over time, formulating responses when faced with historical information and understanding how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources. At Primrose Lane, History comes alive in any way that we can make it happen so that it is appealing, memorable, practical and relevant. One of these ways is through class trips. Visits include: New Barn Field Centre, Roman Baths, Ancient Technology Centre and the Fleet Air Arm Museum. We also borrow artefacts from Somerset Heritage Centre and arrange for visitors to come in to school. Our hope is that the knowledge and skills acquired at Primrose Lane will inspire pupils to become open-minded individuals who can leave the school ready to develop further and make a valuable contribution to society. |
